Miss Mary Ellison, 1880
Mary Cassatt
Oil on Canvas
National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
85.5 x 65.1 cm (33 11/16 x 25 5/8 in)
This artwork shows a woman named Miss Mary Ellison sitting on a couch in front of a mirror. She has a bored, almost sad look on her face and she holds a fan in her hand. Mary Cassatt met Miss Ellison through Louise Waldron Elder (later Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer, a well-known American art collector and a patron of Cassatt). There is not much contrast in this painting because of the yellow, tan, and white colors on the couch and Miss Ellison's dress. There is, however, plenty of texture and organic form on the couch and Miss Ellison.
